‘Laconia in World War I’

LACONIA —The Laconia Historical and Museum Society will open an exhibit, “Laconia in World War I,” on the Upper Level of the Laconia Public Library, at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23.

After the Cunard Liner, Laconia — named for this city — was sunk by a German U-boat, Feb. 25, 1917. President Woodrow Wilson and the United States Congress agreed that this act deserved a declaration of war, issued, April 6, 1917.

Enough was enough. The City of Laconia had lost its namesake steamship and the Honor Roll at Veterans Park reflects those local soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Laconia stories, letters, and objects from the War to End All Wars will be displayed.

The exhibit, which runs through December, is free and open to the public, and may be viewed during normal library hours.

For further information call 603-527-1278, e-mail lhmslpl@metrocast.net  or go to www.laconiahistory.com or Facebook.

2017-2018 Annual Appeal

Our Water Street property continues to need attention. Chief issues are ancient HVAC, electrical and plumbing needs which need to be addressed.  We ask for your assistance to help with some of these building needs. Your contributions will also help the Society to continue to present quality programming. In 2018, LHMS is planning several events to honor the city of Laconia in its 125th year.

How can you help? Please consider making a donation toward operating expenses and Society needs. Make a donation and also think of us in your estate planning. Donations can be a one-time payment or consist of small monthly payments which can add up to a substantial annual contribution. We are happy to help you arrange a payment plan to make your giving easier. Can we please add your name to our list of generous donors this year? Please mail your donation to LHMS, PO Box 1126, Laconia, NH 03247.

Thank you for your generous donation and support. Please take a moment to mail your donation today!

It is support from people like you that will help to keep the history of this great city alive for generations to come.

Thompson Ames Historical Society and LHMS Annual Joint Meeting, Oct. 15

GILFORD — Thompson-Ames Historical Society will host members of the Laconia Historical and Museum Society and the general public at the old Meeting House in the Gilford Village District on Monday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. This yearly gathering is held every October in either Laconia or Gilford and has proven to be a popular storytelling event.

A short presentation is planned on the early days of this region as part of Gilmanton before Gilford was chartered in 1812. A closing open discussion will be held as to why historical societies continue to be relevant nationwide.

‘Lakeport With Photos Through the Ages’

The Laconia Historical and Museum Society will present a talk entitled “Lakeport With Photos Through the Ages” on Monday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Leavitt Park Clubhouse at 334 Elm St.

Co-sponsored by the Lakeport Community Association and the Leavitt Park Association, the program will highlight selected images from the almost 200 photos contained in the yearly calendars published annually by the LCA since 2000, with the exception of 2004 and 2010. Most of these images have not been published elsewhere.

A number of local historians will be on hand to comment on the photos as they are screened.
In view of their involvement in the production of the calendars, as well as their dedication to Lakeport history, the program is dedicated to the memory of Bob and Anita Fortier, Wanda Tibbetts and Armand Bolduc.

The program is free. For further information, call 603-527-1278, email lhmslpl@metrocast.net, or visit www.laconiahistory.com.

We hope to see you there!
